This course is delivered by Navathome, a RYA Recognised Training Centre specialising in On-line training.

The Coastal/Yachtmaster Offshore is the correct course for both Yachtmaster Offshore and Coastal Yachtmaster. The pre course requirement is RYA Day Skipper level theory and some sea miles under your belt would be beneficial.

This course has been completely revised to cover the latest RYA Syllabus for Coastal/Yachtmaster Offshore and are fully interactive with great animated graphics in order to keep things fun. Priced at £300 for the Coastal/Yachtmaster Offshore the RYA course pack contains course notes, Training Almanac, RYA Training charts, a download link for the RYA plotter simulator, connection to the On-line course and questions. Along with a Portland type plotter and a pair of brass dividers (if required).

Postage is included within the UK and you will receive personal help throughout your course from our fully qualified RYA Instructors.

Your course will not expire until you pass you will never need to buy the course again. Your access last 6 months after which there is a £30 option to renew as many times as you like until you pass. You can also put your course on hold if you go through a patch where you are unable to continue. 

Extended access

Once you have completed and passed your course you have free access to the lessons for two years.

Support, feedback and help

You will be tutored/supported by an experienced RYA St. Thomas More Sailing Instructor working on behalf of Navathome.com. We do not run practical courses so the attention of our instructors is devoted to being available and able to assist you whenever you need it.  You are also welcome to come along to our free drop-in sessions at our base here at St. Thomas More Catholic Academy to help with any of the tricker stuff.

Is this the right course for me

The Coastal/Yachtmaster theory course is the level required for RYA Coastal Yachtmaster, RYA Yachtmaster Offshore practical certificates and is a pre course requirement for the RYA Yachtmaster Ocean theory course.

The course is made up of detailed lessons, most of which are animated for easy learning. Each lesson is followed by a set of questions which you can answer online. Once an answer is submitted the feedback is instant in the form of a detailed answer page. Some answers will be forwarded to your instructor who will provide personal feedback and help where required.

One of the major advantages of using the On-line Coastal/Yachtmaster Offshore course is being able to know instantly how you are doing and you can check back and see all your results in the results file on your home page.

Syllabus for the RYA Coastal/Yachtmaster On-line theory course

  • Day Skipper revision:- Charts and Publications, variation, deviation, position fixing revision, course to steer revision and leeway Revision.
  • Tidal heights revision, tide tables, time zones, tidal graphs (Curves), secondary ports and computation of rates.
  • Estimated position, circle of error, navigation web, running fixes, and effect of leeway.
  • Course to steer, extended lessons on leeway, estimated position taking into account leeway.
  • Pilotage and pilot planning, transits, leading lines, clearing bearings, circle of error and pilot planning.
  • Passage planning, SOLAS V. regulations, requirements for a passage, port regulations and example passage plans.
  • Passage making, practice chart work paper, includes: Sample assessment questions, estimated position and course to steer.
  • Buoyage and lights, buoyage revision, dipping distance and light characteristics.
  • Electronic navigation, GPS Basics, using navigation webs, using cross track error, using depth sounders, radar and chart navigation systems.
  • Meteorology, weather Information, reading synoptic charts, global weather systems, low pressure systems, local weather effects, sea breeze, fog and divergence and convergence.
  • Collision regulations, general regulations, lights, shapes, sound signals, underway, making way and collision avoidance.
  • Safety and environment, safety briefs, safety equipment, mayday, rescue, dangerous situations, fog and stability.

How do I take the assessment? 

The assessment can be taken On-line or at a participating training centre. If your certificate is for commercial use then the assessment can be invigilated by a professional person.

Essential information on your Data

To enable access to your online course we need to share some of your personal data with Navathome via www.navathome.com. This training website and database is held and maintained on a secure server. Navathome is an RYA training centre which specialises in online navigation training and will not use your personal information for any reason other than enabling your course.
